Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, embarked on a three-day tour of Nigeria, marking their first public visit to this West African nation. Although they are no longer “working royals,” their warm reception in Nigeria showcased the enduring ties between the royal family and Africa.
Meghan, who recently discovered through a genealogy test that she is “43% Nigerian,” expressed her connection to the country during their visit. At the Lightway Academy in Abuja, she addressed students, saying, “My daughter Lili looked at me and said she could see her reflection in my eyes, and said, ‘Mama, I see me in you and you in me.’ As I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well.”
The couple received traditional Nigerian necklaces made of wooden beads, symbolizing their appreciation for the local culture. Meghan’s desire to “dig deeper” into her Nigerian roots resonated with many, emphasizing the importance of understanding one’s heritage.
Prince Harry, a passionate advocate for mental health, addressed the students at the Lightway Academy. He emphasized that mental health affects every person and encouraged open conversations to combat stigma. “The more you talk about it, the more you can kick stigma away,” he told the audience. His commitment to this cause extends beyond borders, and Nigeria welcomed his message with enthusiasm.
The royal couple’s visit was at the invitation of Nigeria’s military, focusing on discussions related to the future work of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Foundation. This charity supports wounded servicemembers and veterans through sports. Nigeria has a similar program and collaborates with Invictus, making this visit a meaningful exchange of ideas and experiences.
Prince Harry’s recent solo trip to London for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation with his British royal family. However, during his time in London, he did not meet with his brother, Prince William, or his father, King Charles III. Despite being just two miles apart, their schedules did not align. In a statement, the Duke of Sussex explained that the meeting was not possible due to “his Majesty’s full program” on that day.
