Taylor Swift gave fans a brief glimpse into her own creative process amid rumors that she is the focus of a purported diss track on her new album, The Life of a Showgirl.
Charli posted a brief video of an engineer sitting facing the mixing board in a recording studio on X (formerly Twitter) on October 5. In the five-second clip, a number of string instruments produced a sound that gradually grew in volume before two notes were played quickly one after the other
Charli (born Charlotte Emma Aitchison) merely captioned the photo with a text-based heart, providing minimal context for the musical moment.
The song "Actually Romantic" from Taylor's recently released album, which was released on October 3, was immediately interpreted by fans as a reaction to Charli's song "Sympathy Is a Knife," which was taken from her 2024 album brat.
According to Taylor's lyrics, "I heard you call me 'Boring Barbie' when the coke's got you brave." "You wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face after high-fiving my ex and then saying you're glad he ghosted me."
Some listeners wondered if the lyrics of "Sympathy Is a Knife," which Charli has described as a song about her personal insecurities, were alluding to Taylor's brief relationship with lead singer Matty Healy of The 1975. (In July, Charli wed George Daniel, Matty's bandmate.)
On the song, Charli sang, "I don't want to see her backstage at my boyfriend's show." "I'm crossing my fingers and hoping they end quickly."
In the midst of the discussion, Taylor, 35, revealed the inspiration for her song during The Life of a Showgirl's "Track by Track Version" on Amazon Music.
"Really Romantic is a song about discovering that someone else has had an adversarial, one-sided relationship with you that you were unaware of," she explained. "And suddenly they start going overboard, and they start telling you that you've been living in their head for free and you didn't even realize it."
“How flattering that someone has made you such a big part of their reality and you didn't even think about this,” Taylor continued. “It's actually pretty romantic if you really, really think about it.”
