Ryan Reynolds is once again proving that few in Hollywood can blend humor, marketing, and cultural commentary quite like he does. In a witty new campaign for Mint Mobile, the actor and entrepreneur pokes fun at the ongoing debate about artificial intelligence in entertainment — by tracking down a real woman named Tilly Norwood.
The ad comes amid industry-wide tension surrounding the rise of AI “actors,” particularly following buzz around a virtual performer also named Tilly Norwood, whose digital debut sparked heated discussions about the future of human talent in Hollywood. Playing off the controversy, Reynolds’ new spot for Mint Mobile’s home internet service flips the script by introducing audiences to Natalie “Tilly” Norwood — a genuine, flesh-and-blood Mint Mobile customer.
In the 30-second commercial, Reynolds introduces the brand’s new “MINTernet” 5G home internet service, priced at $30 a month. “Everything about Mint Mobile seems unreal,” he says, leaning into the theme. “And now, we’re introducing 5G home internet for $30 a month. Yes, that’s real! That’s why we invited Tilly Norwood, a real Mint customer, to help us announce it.”
With his trademark dry wit, Reynolds then asks Norwood, “You are real, right?” She calmly replies, “Yep.” He presses further: “Not an AI-generated combination of actors?” to which Norwood shoots back, “I’m a combination of my parents.” The ad ends with a tongue-in-cheek voiceover assuring viewers that the offer is available only to “carbon-based organisms.”
The spot was produced by Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, his advertising and production company known for blending satire with brand storytelling. According to Variety, the ad used no generative AI whatsoever — not even for the sped-up legal disclaimer at the end, which was voiced by actor Amanda Cook.
The new MINTernet service runs on T-Mobile’s 5G nationwide network. Customers can get started at $30 per month for the first three months if they already have a Mint phone plan. After that, they can either lock in the $30/month rate by renewing on a 12-month plan for $360 upfront or opt for another three-month renewal at $10 more per month ($120 upfront with a Mint voice plan, or $150 without).
Reynolds, who sold Mint Mobile to T-Mobile in 2023, continues to be closely involved in the company’s creative direction through Maximum Effort. The latest campaign is a sharp reminder of his knack for turning real-world conversations — in this case, fears about AI replacing human creativity — into clever marketing moments that highlight Mint’s promise of simplicity, humor, and genuine value.
As the ad’s tagline suggests: AI can fake a lot of things — but it can’t fake unbeatable value.
