Tom Cruise has reportedly shared his candid opinion on the sudden end of his ex-wife Nicole Kidman's 19-year marriage to country music star Keith Urban.
The Hollywood icon, 63, who was married to Kidman from 1990 to 2001, is believed to have labelled the star's split from Urban as "karma" for the way she handled their own highly publicised divorce more than two decades ago. Cruise, the star of the Mission: Impossible franchise, allegedly felt a sting from the public's reaction to their 2001 split, where he was heavily criticised while Kidman received an outpouring of public sympathy.
'When Tom and Nicole split, he caught all the blame and she got all the sympathy. He was painted as the bad guy... that stuck with him for years,' a source confided to International Business Times. The insider claimed that Cruise felt particularly 'stung' by Kidman's public statements following their separation. 'Tom was really stung by the way Nicole handled their break-up. She went on TV, made digs about his height, and painted herself as the victim, while he stayed silent and took the hits.'
The source added that the actor felt his current feelings were 'proven right' now that the Oscar winner's second marriage has unravelled. 'It annoyed him when this guy was painted as this saintly figure who'd swooped in on a white horse, so to speak, and rescued Nicole from the hellish memory of their marriage,' they revealed.
The Top Gun star is said to be following the divorce news closely. While a part of him 'feels badly for her, since he knows how much she's hurting,' another part of him is 'allowing himself a little pat on the back and telling people close to him that this is karma doing its thing.' The source concluded: 'Bottom line: He thought they were a hyped up couple who clearly had very little in common from the get-go, now he's been proved right.'
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Tom Cruise for comment. The comments follow a surprising return to social media by Keith Urban, 58, after he had maintained silence for nearly two months following the shock split.
The country superstar shared a post giving fans a preview of his new US reality television competition, The Road. The series follows up-and-coming country acts vying for an opening spot on Urban's American tour. In a promotional clip, Urban shared a candid, light-hearted look back at his evolving hairstyles over the years while discussing his deep commitment to music.
Urban recently spoke out about the difficulties of life on the road, describing moments of being 'completely lonely and miserable' while separated from his family. Kidman, who shares daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, with Urban, filed for divorce on September 30, citing 'irreconcilable differences'. This ended their 19 years of marriage.
Sources have suggested that their busy lives, Urban touring and Kidman working on back-to-back film projects, created a 'lack of intimacy' that contributed to the unexpected separation.
