At a U.S.-hosted panel at the United Nations in New York, rapper Nicki Minaj delivered an impassioned speech calling attention to the escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria and urging international leaders to act swiftly. Her remarks at the event, which featured U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz and faith leaders, placed her firmly in the role of a global advocate for religious freedom.
Minaj began by thanking President Donald Trump for highlighting the crisis, framing his involvement as a push for “urgent action to defend Christians in Nigeria, to combat extremism and to stop the violence against those who simply want to live out their right to religious belief.” She said she was deeply grateful for the platform to raise awareness of what she described as a “deadly threat” to Christian communities in Nigeria.
In her address, Minaj expressed alarm over reports that Nigerian Christians are being systematically targeted. “In Nigeria, Christians are being driven from their homes and killed,” she said. “Churches have been burned, families torn apart, entire communities living in fear constantly simply because of how they pray.” She urged the United Nations to confront the issue not merely as a regional conflict but as a moral crisis demanding global resolve.
Minaj was careful to emphasize that her message was not intended to sow division. “Protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides or dividing people,” she said. “It is about uniting humanity.” She appealed to the shared principles of worship and faith, saying her call for justice reflects a belief that religious freedom is universal and that when places of worship are attacked, “everyone’s heart should break.”
Drawing on her own international experience, Minaj spoke of how music and faith have shaped her worldview: “Music has taken me around the globe … I have seen how people, no matter their language, culture or religion, come alive when they hear a song that touches their soul.” She argued that the right to express one’s faith should be protected everywhere.
Minaj concluded by reaffirming her personal commitment to speaking out against injustice. “This isn’t about taking sides,” she said to her fans, known as the “Barbz.” “It’s about standing up in the face of injustice. What I’ve always stood for, I will continue to stand for, for all my life.”
Her appearance at the UN, arranged in part by Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz and Ambassador Waltz, has already sparked debate and praise. Supporters applaud her for using her massive platform to spotlight a deeply complex issue while critics question her framing and the political implications of her alignment with Trump-era messaging. Nonetheless, Minaj’s speech marks a notable moment in how celebrities are wielding influence on the world’s stage to engage with human rights crises.
