Anthony Geary, the Emmy-winning actor whose portrayal of Luke Spencer helped define modern daytime television, has died. He was 78.
Geary passed away on Sunday, December 14, following complications from a surgical procedure performed earlier in the week, according to TV Insider. His husband of more than three decades, Claudio Gama, confirmed the news in a statement, describing the loss as sudden and deeply painful for their families and friends.
Geary rose to international fame in 1978 when he joined General Hospital as Luke Spencer, a character initially intended for a brief arc. Instead, Luke became the centerpiece of one of the most influential storylines in soap opera history. Paired with Genie Francis' Laura Webber, the duo formed daytime television's most iconic supercouple, culminating in a 1981 on-screen wedding watched by an estimated 30 million viewers.
Born in Coalville, Utah, in 1947, Geary studied theater at the University of Utah before relocating to Los Angeles to pursue acting. His early career included guest appearances on shows such as All in the Family, Starsky & Hutch, Marcus Welby, M.D., and The Young and the Restless. Though he worked steadily, it was General Hospital that made him a household name.
Luke Spencer evolved from a morally dark figure into a complex antihero, a transformation that mirrored shifting standards in daytime storytelling. While the character's controversial origins sparked criticism in later years, Geary openly acknowledged the show's missteps and praised efforts to revisit the storyline with greater sensitivity.
Across his career, Geary earned a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series from 16 nominations, cementing his legacy as one of the most decorated performers in soap history. Despite his success, he frequently expressed ambivalence about being defined by a single role.
Geary stepped away from General Hospital in 2015 and relocated full-time to Amsterdam, embracing a quieter life focused on travel, theater, and personal reflection. He made a final brief appearance on the series in 2017, and the character of Luke was later written off-screen.
Remembered for his intensity, intelligence, and commitment to craft, Anthony Geary leaves behind a body of work that reshaped daytime television and generations of devoted fans.
