The causes of death for Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner have been revealed.
According to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, the pair died on December 14 from "multiple sharp force injuries," which means cuts or stabs from a sharp object.
On December 14, the LAPD was called to Rob and Michele's home, where they discovered two bodies—later identified as the director and his wife—with stab wounds, according to NBC News.
The following day, the LAPD confirmed Rob and Michele were "victims of homicide" and that an investigation led authorities to determine their son Nick Reiner, 32, was "responsible for their deaths," according to a Dec. 15 press release.
Nick was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder on the evening of December 14 and remanded in custody without bail, according to the release.
On December 16, he was charged with two counts of murder and a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, with the Los Angeles County District Attorney stating in a press release that their son "personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife," in the killings.
Nick, who is being represented by lawyer Alan Jackson, has yet to enter a plea.
Following the tragedy, Rob and Michele's loved ones, including children Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy Reiner, 27, confirmed their deaths, saying in a statement to Variety, "We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
Meanwhile, Rob's eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, whom he shared with his late ex-wife Penny Marshall, reflected on her relationship with the When Harry Met Sally director, whom she had last seen the day before.
"I came from the greatest family ever," the 61-year-old told NBC. "I'm not sure what to say. "I'm shocked."
Rob Reiner, known for directing films like The Princess Bride and A Few Good Men, also directed the 2015 film Being Charlie, which was co-written by his son Nick, who revealed that it was loosely based on his own struggles with addiction. In a 2016 interview, Nick discussed the difficulties of his addiction, which included multiple rehab stays and periods of homelessness. He emphasized the impact of his struggles on his identity, claiming that avoiding suggested rehabilitation programs frequently resulted in
living on the streets. Despite these challenges, Nick stated that he has successfully reintegrated into life in Los Angeles and reconnected with his family following a difficult period.
