The investigation into the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, has taken a significant turn as new details emerge regarding the mental health of their son, Nick Reiner. Following the discovery of the couple’s bodies in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025, reports have surfaced indicating that the 32-year-old had been recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. Sources close to the family suggest that a recent change in his psychiatric medication may have played a destabilizing role in the weeks leading up to the tragedy.
According to reports initially published by TMZ and corroborated by various outlets, Nick had been under the care of a psychiatrist to manage his condition. Roughly three to four weeks before the incident, his medication was reportedly adjusted in an attempt to stabilize his behavior. However, sources allege the change had a catastrophic effect, leaving Nick “out of his head” and increasingly “erratic and dangerous.” This shift reportedly caused significant alarm within the household, with Rob Reiner allegedly expressing fear for his own safety in the days prior to his death.
The erratic behavior reportedly reached a boiling point on the evening of December 13, during a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien. Witnesses described Nick as acting in a highly disorganized manner, engaging in confrontations with guests and eventually entering into a heated argument with his parents. The following day, the bodies of Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered with multiple sharp-force injuries. Nick was arrested later that evening and has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
