Vince Zampella, the influential video game developer who co created the globally successful Call of Duty franchise, has died in a car crash in California at the age of 55. His death was confirmed by Electronic Arts, the company that owns Respawn Entertainment, the game studio Zampella helped establish.
The fatal accident occurred on a highway in Los Angeles on Sunday. According to officials, Zampella was traveling in a Ferrari with another individual when the vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed in flames. Both occupants of the car were killed in the crash.
Authorities stated that the passenger seated inside the vehicle was ejected upon impact, while the driver remained trapped inside the burning car. It remains unclear whether Zampella was driving at the time of the accident and the identity of the second person involved has not been released. Investigators said the cause of the crash is still unknown.
Electronic Arts released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss. A spokesperson described Zampella’s passing as an unimaginable loss and extended condolences to his family, loved ones, and the many people affected by his work. The company acknowledged his lasting influence on the video game industry and his role in shaping some of its most successful franchises.
Zampella rose to prominence in 2003 when he co created Call of Duty alongside longtime collaborators Jason West and Grant Collier. The game, which drew inspiration from events of World War II, quickly became a major success. Over the years, the franchise evolved into one of the most profitable and recognizable names in entertainment, selling more than 500 million copies worldwide. The series has also expanded beyond gaming, with an upcoming live action film in development.
Call of Duty was only one part of Zampella’s legacy. He also played a key role in developing other popular titles, including Medal of Honor, Titanfall, and Apex Legends. His work consistently focused on immersive gameplay and player experience, earning him widespread respect across the industry.
Keza MacDonald, the Guardian’s video games editor, described Zampella as someone who deeply cared about how people felt when they played games. She noted that his passion for player experience was evident whenever he spoke about his work.
In 2010, Zampella and Jason West were fired from Activision, the publisher of Call of Duty. This led to a lengthy legal dispute that was ultimately settled out of court in 2012. Following that chapter, Zampella continued his career at Electronic Arts, where he worked on Battlefield 6, a title widely seen as a direct competitor to Call of Duty.
Infinity Ward, the original studio behind Call of Duty, paid tribute to Zampella in a public statement, saying he would always hold a special place in the company’s history. The studio praised his legacy of creating iconic and lasting entertainment.
Vince Zampella leaves behind a profound impact on modern gaming, with a body of work that helped define an entire genre and influenced millions of players around the world.
