Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have gone their separate ways after nearly a decade together, choosing to quietly end their romantic relationship while remaining focused on their shared role as parents.
The actor-director, 69, and the screenwriter, 35, confirmed that they parted ways in 2024 following nine years as a couple. Despite the breakup, the former partners emphasized that their priority remains raising their 8-year-old son, Lars, together.
In a joint message addressing the split, the two acknowledged the emotional weight of the decision while underscoring their commitment to their child. "Although it's sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible," they said.
Gibson and Ross were introduced through mutual friends in 2014 and began dating soon after. Their relationship largely stayed out of the public eye, with only a handful of red carpet appearances over the years. In 2017, they welcomed their son just days before Gibson earned an Oscar nomination for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge.
The separation comes after a difficult stretch for the family. Earlier this year, their Malibu residence was destroyed during the Los Angeles wildfires. Gibson was away for work at the time, but Ross, Lars, and their pets were able to evacuate safely.
Following the loss, Gibson spoke publicly about the experience, noting that material things could be replaced and that the safety of his family mattered most.
Beyond his son with Ross, Gibson is a father to eight older children from previous relationships. Professionally, he continues to remain active in the film industry and is currently developing The Resurrection of the Christ, a follow-up to his 2004 film The Passion of the Christ.
While their relationship has changed, Gibson and Ross have made it clear that co-parenting remains a shared responsibility, with both committed to providing a stable and supportive environment for their son.
