In a legal development involving a pillar of holiday cinema, veteran actor Daniel Stern was formally charged with a misdemeanor count of soliciting prostitution. The 68-year-old actor, best known for his iconic role as the bumbling burglar Marv in the Home Alone
franchise, faces the charge following an undercover operation conducted by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office late last year.
The incident that led to the charges occurred on December 10, 2025, at a hotel in Camarillo, California. According to court documents and statements from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, Stern was cited during an alleged sting operation. Law enforcement officials clarified that Stern was not arrested or taken into custody at the scene; instead, he was issued a misdemeanor citation and released on his own recognizance. After reviewing the evidence submitted by sheriff’s deputies, prosecutors decided this week to move forward with a formal criminal filing.
Stern’s arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the Ventura County Superior Court. Under California law, a conviction for soliciting prostitution as a first-time misdemeanor can carry a maximum penalty of six months in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000. Legal experts note that for defendants without a significant criminal history, such cases are often resolved through fines, community service, or diversion programs.
The timing of the legal trouble has struck a chord with fans, as it coincides with the season when the Home Alone films typically see peak viewership. Stern has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years, transitioning from Hollywood to a lifestyle as a cattle and citrus farmer in Somis, California. He is also a respected bronze sculptor and had recently made headlines for a commission to create a sculpture for the original “Home Alone house” in Winnetka, Illinois.
Neither Stern nor his legal representatives have issued a formal public statement regarding the charges. Stern has been married to his wife, Laure Mattos, since 1980, and the couple shares three children, including California State Senator Henry Stern. This legal hurdle follows a minor health scare in October 2025, from which Stern had reportedly fully recovered. As the court case proceeds, the actor remains focused on his ranch life, with his legal counsel expected to represent him in the upcoming proceedings.
