Prime Video has revealed a first look at its upcoming Tomb Raider series, confirming that production is now underway on the live action reboot. The new series stars Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, one of the most recognizable characters in video game history. The project marks a major new chapter for the long running franchise and signals Prime Video’s continued investment in large scale adaptations of popular global properties.
The Tomb Raider series was originally greenlit by Prime Video in May 2024, with Turner’s casting first reported later that year in November. Now officially in production, the show aims to reintroduce Lara Croft to a new audience while honoring the legacy that has made the character a cultural icon for nearly three decades. The first look image released by Prime Video offers an early glimpse of Turner in character, setting the tone for a grounded and cinematic take on the legendary adventurer.
Turner becomes the latest high profile actress to portray Lara Croft on screen. The character was previously brought to life by Angelina Jolie in two feature films during the early 2000s, followed by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot film. Each portrayal reflected a different era of the franchise, and Turner’s casting suggests a fresh interpretation shaped for long form storytelling. With a television series format, the creative team has the opportunity to explore Lara Croft’s world, motivations, and challenges in greater depth than previous film adaptations.
The cast also includes a strong ensemble of well known performers. Among those joining Turner are Martin Bobb Semple, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein. The wide ranging cast points to a story that will move across different settings and introduce a variety of allies and adversaries within Lara Croft’s journey.
Creative leadership on the series comes from Phoebe Waller Bridge, who serves as creator, writer, and executive producer. Chad Hodge is also on board as executive producer and co showrunner alongside Waller Bridge. Jonathan van Tulleken will direct the series and act as an executive producer as well. Waller Bridge remains under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, and her involvement brings additional attention to the project given her reputation for character driven storytelling.
The Tomb Raider franchise began in 1996 with the release of the first video game, quickly establishing Lara Croft as a defining female action hero. The most recent mainline game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was released in 2018, while several classic titles have since been remastered for modern platforms. Looking ahead, two new games titled Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider Catalyst are scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027, keeping the franchise active across multiple forms of media.
The series is executive produced by Crystal Dynamics along with partners from Wells Street Productions, Story Kitchen, and Legendary Television. It is produced by Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM Studios. The project was developed under a broader agreement between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, facilitated through Story Kitchen’s first look deal to expand the Tomb Raider universe into new series and films.
With production now underway and a high profile creative team in place, Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series is shaping up to be a major event for fans of the franchise and for viewers discovering Lara Croft for the first time.
