Eric Dane was unable to attend the ALS Network's Champions for Cures and Care Gala on January 24 after his ongoing battle with ALS affected his health. The actor had been scheduled to appear in person to receive the Advocate of the Year Award.
Organizers confirmed his absence shortly before the event, explaining that Dane was not physically well enough to attend. In a statement shared ahead of the ceremony, the ALS Network said, "The ALS Network has been informed that Eric Dane had hoped to join us this evening to accept his Advocate of the Year Award, but due to the physical realities of ALS, he is not well enough to attend. We remain deeply grateful for his courage, advocacy, and continued commitment to the ALS community, and we honour him fully this evening with our profound respect and support."
Broadway performer and Grammy nominee Aaron Lazar, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2022, accepted the award on Dane's behalf. The gala, held in Pasadena, recognizes individuals who have contributed to advancing research, care, and awareness for those living with the neurodegenerative disease.
Dane, 53, was named the main honouree in September, with the ALS Network crediting him for bringing international attention to ALS through his leadership and public advocacy. At the time, Dane said the recognition reflected the strength of the ALS community rather than his own efforts.
During the ceremony, attendees were shown a video montage featuring messages from friends and former co-stars, including Grey's Anatomy actors James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson. Dane also appeared in a pre-recorded message thanking the organization and dedicating the award to those affected by the disease, caregivers, and advocates pushing for progress.
The actor first revealed his ALS diagnosis in April after months of medical testing. Since then, he has spoken openly about the impact of the illness, including losing function in one arm and requiring ongoing medical care. His condition has also caused him to miss other public appearances, including the 2025 Emmy Awards, where he had been scheduled to present alongside former co-star Jesse Williams.
Despite the challenges, Dane has continued to work selectively and remain active in advocacy. He has appeared in recent projects, including Euphoria, Countdown, and a guest role on Brilliant Minds, where he portrayed a firefighter living with ALS. He is also an ambassador for the nonprofit I AM ALS.
Speaking during a virtual panel in December, Dane explained his motivation for being open about his diagnosis, saying, "I think it's imperative that I share my journey with as many people as I can because I don't feel like my life is about me anymore."
While there is currently no cure for ALS, treatments can help slow progression and improve quality of life.
