Zendaya admits she initially had a different impression of Robert Pattinson when they first met.
The 29 year old actress and the 39 year old actor spoke candidly in a new cover story for Interview about collaborating on their upcoming film The Drama. Zendaya also reflected on how her fiancé, Tom Holland, saw Pattinson in a completely different light.
"I think it's interesting, because you probably know what I thought about you before I met you, but I don't think I asked you what you thought about me," Zendaya told Pattinson. She continued, noting that when they first met, Pattinson seemed quiet and reserved, which made him appear mysterious. "Then I talked to Tom and he was like, 'No, he's super fun and always laughing and joking,' and I was like, 'Really? I haven't experienced that side of him, I guess.'"
Pattinson responded with humor, admitting that maintaining a mysterious image is difficult. "I've learned again and again that if you just don't speak, people are like, 'Wow. You're really intimidating,' but I just can't maintain it," he said. Zendaya teased that he had kept it up for a while, particularly during the filming of previous movies.
The two actors are set to co-star in three films this year: The Drama, Dune: Part Three, and The Odyssey, which also features Holland. Zendaya and Holland became engaged in January 2025 after four years of dating. Holland and Pattinson share a long friendship, having worked together on the 2020 Netflix drama The Devil All the Time.
When asked about his impression of Zendaya, Pattinson spoke carefully. He ultimately praised her as a role model for young fans. "Do you know how people always ask, 'Do you feel a responsibility to be an example to your fans?' I think you're a good example to the youth," he said.
In The Drama, the actors portray an engaged couple whose wedding plans are disrupted by a dramatic revelation. Zendaya expressed a desire to avoid the promotional cycle that typically follows a movie release, while Pattinson noted that listening to actors discuss their work often makes him feel like everyone else sounds like a genius.
The Drama is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3.
