Nick Reiner has formally denied charges accusing him of killing his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, as the high-profile case continues to unfold in Los Angeles.

During a Feb. 23 arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court, the 32-year-old entered a plea of not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. The charges stem from the deaths of the couple, who were found stabbed in their home on Dec. 14.

Reiner appeared in court in custody, wearing a brown jail uniform and handcuffs. He is now represented by deputy public defender Kimberly Greene, who took over the case after his previous attorney, Alan Jackson, stepped down last month. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 29.

Jackson had earlier insisted on his client's innocence, stating at the time, "Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder." The attorney did not publicly detail why he withdrew, saying only that he felt he had "no choice."

Authorities allege that Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, died from multiple sharp-force injuries. Prosecutors have also indicated a special allegation that a knife was used. Nick Reiner was arrested the same day the bodies were discovered and has remained behind bars without bail since then.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the office is still evaluating whether to pursue the death penalty, noting that experienced prosecutors would be involved in the decision-making process. If convicted, Reiner could face life without parole or capital punishment.

The case has drawn significant public attention not only because of the violent nature of the allegations but also due to Rob Reiner's stature in Hollywood. The director was widely known for films including When Harry Met Sally..., The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men.

Family members have publicly mourned the loss. In a joint statement, siblings Jake and Romy Reiner described their grief, saying, "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day." They added that their parents "weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."
Half-sister Tracy Reiner also reflected on the loss, saying she came from "the greatest family ever."

According to court proceedings, Reiner spoke only briefly during the latest hearing to acknowledge the future court date. No arguments regarding his mental state were raised in court during the appearance.

Prosecutors have indicated the case could take time to move forward due to the volume of evidence under review. Meanwhile, Reiner remains in custody as the legal process continues.
