Selena Gomez has finally addressed long-running fan speculation about one of Taylor Swift's beloved songs, confirming that the evermore track "Dorothea" was written with her in mind.
Speaking on the March 3 episode of husband Benny Blanco's Friends Keep Secrets podcast, the singer and Rare Beauty founder opened up about her decades-long friendship with Swift and how it has been reflected in the pop star's music.
"'Dorothea' is about me," Gomez said. She reflected on their early years navigating fame together, adding, "I feel like a lot of huge moments that were self-defining, from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between, we were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18."
The confirmation comes more than five years after Swift released evermore in 2020, when fans first began theorizing that the song's lyrics pointed to Gomez. References in the track to a woman "sellin' dreams" and "sellin' makeup and magazines" were widely interpreted as nods to Gomez's career and her Rare Beauty brand.
Looking back, Gomez emphasized that their bond has remained steady despite growing up in the spotlight. "We didn't really know what was going on," she said. "We've never seen each other any differently. When I listen to it, I'm so impressed by how it's eloquently put."
The pair first became friends in 2008 while both were dating members of the Jonas Brothers, and their relationship has endured for nearly two decades. During the podcast conversation, Gomez noted how meaningful it is to revisit songs inspired by their early dreams.
She also revealed that Swift once wrote an unreleased track about their friendship titled "Family." According to Gomez, the song captured their ambitions at the time and how strongly they supported one another's goals. "There's this song that Taylor wrote about us and it was called 'Family'. It was over, easily, a decade ago, insinuating in the lyrics, without quoting, it is basically saying you have these amazing dreams. You want to be in a movie, in every crowd I see you." She recalled that the lyrics reflected a shared belief in each other's futures, describing the moment as "the sweetest thing."
When evermore originally debuted, Swift described the album as largely fictional storytelling. At the time, she explained that the record consisted of "17 tales, some of which are mirrored or intersecting one another," and characterized "Dorothea" as the story of a girl who leaves her hometown to chase Hollywood dreams before returning for the holidays.
Gomez's recent comments, however, add a more personal layer to the fan-favorite track and appear to validate years of online speculation. The singer expressed appreciation for how their journey has unfolded, noting how both of their early aspirations ultimately came true.
Reflecting on their long friendship, Gomez described the experience as deeply meaningful, pointing to the many life chapters they have navigated side by side, from early fame to major career milestones and relationships.
