Daniel Neeson, the 29-year-old son of Liam Neeson and the late Natasha Richardson, is speaking candidly about having surgery to correct a congenital heart defect he has monitored since birth.
In a heartfelt Instagram message posted Tuesday, March 3, Daniel revealed he was born with Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV), a condition in which the heart's aortic valve develops with two flaps instead of the usual three. Affecting roughly 2 percent of the population, BAV can remain undetected for years before complications emerge.
Daniel explained that he attended cardiology appointments twice a year for much of his life to keep watch over his heart health. Over time, doctors observed significant enlargement of his left ventricle and a widening of his aorta, warning signs that ultimately made surgery unavoidable. While some individuals with BAV require intervention later in adulthood, Daniel said his case progressed earlier than expected.
Medical experts note that BAV may lead to narrowing of the aortic valve, leakage of blood backward through the valve, or expansion of the aorta. Daniel shared that he experienced these developments firsthand, prompting his decision to move forward with a corrective procedure.
Reflecting on the experience, he described the empowerment that comes from staying informed and proactive about one's health. Rather than reacting to a crisis, he emphasized the value of preparation and awareness. He also admitted there was something surreal about discovering that a silent condition had been evolving internally for decades without dramatic symptoms.
Daniel said the operation required him to relinquish control and place his trust in skilled surgeons and dedicated nurses. He approached the procedure not with bravado, but with mindfulness, viewing it as a meaningful passage toward healing.
Now focused on recovery, Daniel encouraged others to advocate for themselves and seek cardiac evaluations, even in the absence of symptoms. He also expressed gratitude to his fiancée, Natalie Ackerman, and to friends and family who supported him throughout the process.
