Christian Bale is preparing to return to theaters with his latest film The Bride, a science fiction story directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. As the film arrives in cinemas, the actor has been reflecting on an unexpected connection that some viewers have made between the new project and one of his earliest roles in Hollywood.

During a recent interview with BuzzFeed, Bale reacted with surprise when a journalist compared a scene in The Bride to his performance in the 1992 Disney musical Newsies. The actor laughed at the comparison but quickly pointed out that the two projects are very different in tone and style.

“I would never have thought anybody would relate Newsies to The Bride that is hysterical,” Bale said. “But wait, big difference. Newsies is a musical. This is not a musical.”

The Bride features a strong ensemble cast that includes Jessie Buckley, Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard. The film is directed by Academy Award winning actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, marking another collaboration between Bale and the Gyllenhaal family. While the story carries elements of science fiction, Bale explained that the moment that reminded some people of a musical performance was actually part of a dramatic and emotional scene rather than a choreographed number.

According to Bale, the movement in the scene comes from an intense burst of energy within the character rather than a planned dance routine. He described it as a powerful physical reaction tied directly to the story.

“This is something where it is just a ridiculously energetic expression, with possession,” Bale explained. “Which you will understand when you watch the whole movie, but it is not a musical at all.”

Although Bale admitted that filming the scene was enjoyable, he also suggested that audiences should not expect him to return to musical roles anytime soon. Reflecting on his experience in Newsies more than three decades ago, the actor said he doubts he will step into that genre again.

“I do not think I will ever step foot in a musical again in my life,” he said. “Of course never say never, but almost never say never on this one.”

Still, Bale described the particular moment in The Bride as memorable. He revealed that the sequence involved heavy footwear rather than traditional dance shoes and developed naturally during filming. The scene, he said, evolved into what he called a spontaneous dance of protest that eventually leads to serious consequences within the story.

Newsies originally premiered in April 1992 and featured Bale alongside David Moscow, Luke Edwards, Robert Duvall and Bill Pullman. Although the film gained a loyal following over the years, Bale has largely stayed away from musical performances since that early role.

The Bride also reunites Bale with Maggie Gyllenhaal nearly 18 years after they worked together on The Dark Knight. This time their collaboration took a different form, with Gyllenhaal serving as director rather than a fellow cast member. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Gyllenhaal reflected on how their professional relationship has evolved since their last project together.

She explained that working on The Bride required a deeper creative connection compared to their previous experience on The Dark Knight. Even their first phone call about the project, she said, involved thoughtful conversations about the story and the emotional direction of the film.

The Bride opened in theaters on March 6 and also features Penelope Cruz, Julianne Hough, John Magaro and Annette Bening. As audiences begin to discover the film, Bale hopes viewers will see the scene that sparked the musical comparison in its full context and understand that despite the energy of the moment, it is far from a return to the musical stage.
