Former Wisconsin Badgers player Jack Pugh has died at the age of 24, the university confirmed.

Pugh played as a tight end for Wisconsin from 2021 to 2023 before stepping away from the sport to focus on his mental health. His death was announced by the school, though no official cause has been shared.

In a statement released on social media, Wisconsin football paid tribute to the former athlete, describing him as a positive presence within the program. The message highlighted his character, noting that he brought genuine energy to the team and was deeply valued by teammates and staff. The university also acknowledged his academic achievement, confirming that he earned his degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2025.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Pugh was considered a highly promising recruit. Despite only playing football during his final two years of high school, he earned a four star rating and attracted interest from several major programs, including Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan State Spartans, Maryland Terrapins and Minnesota Golden Gophers.

In 2023, Pugh publicly announced his decision to retire from football. In a message shared on social media at the time, he explained that while he had faced some physical challenges, his decision was primarily driven by his mental health. He spoke candidly about experiencing prolonged depression and struggles with substance use, and said he chose to step away in order to pursue a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Pugh emphasized that football itself was not the cause of his struggles, but rather that he had neglected his mental wellbeing for a long time. He reflected on the importance of addressing those challenges and taking steps toward healing.

After his passing, tributes began to emerge from those who knew him. Among them was Braelon Allen, a former teammate who now plays for the New York Jets. Allen shared the news on social media and encouraged others to take care of their mental health.

Pugh is remembered not only for his time on the field, but also for the impact he had on those around him.
