Ariana Grande is opening up about the inspiration behind her upcoming album Petal.
On Thursday, May 7, the singer shared a black-and-white Instagram Reel that offered fans a closer look at the creative vision driving the project. The clip, styled like an old vintage film reel, begins with Grande enthusiastically shouting "surprise" to a small crowd before diving into the meaning behind the album.
The 32-year-old explained that Petal represents growth and resilience.
"It's about something alive finding a way to grow through difficult conditions," Grande said. "The record explores letting go of unhealthy attachments, whether those are internal struggles, outside opinions or things that no longer belong in my life."
She added that listeners can interpret the songs however they choose and connect the themes to their own experiences.
Grande also described the project as more daring and emotionally raw than some of her past work.
"This album feels a little feral," she admitted. "It comes from a side of me that maybe I was too careful or too polite to fully express before. This time it feels more fearless."
She captioned the social media post simply, "more about petal."
The Grammy winner first announced her eighth studio album in April ahead of her upcoming Eternal Sunshine Tour, which begins in June. At the time, she revealed that the title Petal symbolized life and growth emerging from difficult circumstances.
Earlier this month, Grande also gave fans a glimpse into the recording process by posting studio photos on Instagram. The images showed her working behind a soundboard, recording vocals and reviewing files on a computer. One final image featured the singer celebrating with her arms raised while seated in a studio chair.
Grande's previous album, Eternal Sunshine, debuted in March 2024. A deluxe edition followed one year later.
The upcoming Eternal Sunshine Tour will mark her first concert series since the Sweetener World Tour in 2019.
In a 2025 interview with Interview Magazine, Grande reflected on how both music and acting helped her rebuild confidence after struggling with parts of her career.
She explained that working on Wicked and portraying Glinda allowed her to reconnect with herself creatively and emotionally.
According to Grande, returning to music and touring now feels healing instead of overwhelming, describing the experience as reclaiming parts of herself she had lost along the way.
