A source told PEOPLE that the former couple still care deeply about one another and remain supportive despite the split.
"Pete and Elsie are working on things," the insider shared. "They want one another to succeed and be happy."
According to the source, the relationship has gone through several difficult periods before, with the pair previously separating and reconciling multiple times. It remains uncertain whether they will eventually reunite again.
The update follows reports claiming the couple split just months after welcoming their first child together.
Earlier this year, another source told PEOPLE that Davidson and Hewitt had been facing challenges while adjusting to life as new parents. Despite the struggles, they were said to be trying to make the relationship work.
"There are issues, but they're trying to figure things out together," the insider explained in April. "They're adjusting to parenthood and working through the process."
The source also noted that their daughter remained their main priority during this period.
Davidson, 32, and Hewitt, 30, first sparked romance rumors in March 2025 before later confirming they were expecting a baby together that July.
Their daughter, Scottie Rose, was born on Dec. 12, 2025. Her name honors Davidson's late father, Scott Matthew Davidson, the New York City firefighter who died during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
In a previous interview with PEOPLE, Davidson spoke warmly about fatherhood while promoting a Crocs campaign.
"Dad life is awesome," the comedian said. "It is exhausting and rewarding and cute. And I'm very lucky because Elsie is a fantastic mom."
He also admitted becoming a parent had changed him emotionally, joking that he suddenly felt protective all the time.
"It's like you're ready to fight anyone," Davidson explained. "It's like, relax. Nobody is doing anything to your kid."
The former Saturday Night Live star also revealed he had tattooed Scottie's name near his ear as a tribute to his daughter.
Since Scottie's birth, the couple occasionally shared moments from their parenting journey online while choosing to keep their daughter's face private.
Earlier this year, Hewitt celebrated Scottie turning 12 weeks old by reflecting on her lengthy labor and revealing her daughter arrived at the exact time she had predicted before heading to the hospital.
