German travel vlogger Vanessa Konopka, known for her popular "Happiness Crossing" channel, has died at age 28 after battling severe health complications for several months. Her death on March 7, 2025, came following a prolonged hospitalization on the Philippine island of Boracay.
Konopka was initially hospitalized on December 31 after collapsing at a New Year's Eve celebration while "experiencing severe swelling throughout her body," according to social media updates from her boyfriend Fernando.
Doctors diagnosed the influencer with "severe liver damage and pneumonia," conditions that left her critically weakened. Fernando reported that she became "unable to eat properly, walk, or even speak easily" during the most severe phase of her illness.
The couple documented Konopka's health struggle through social media, showing her frequently bedridden state. Followers noticed her skin had developed jaundice, a yellowing indicative of liver dysfunction. Despite these challenges, Konopka maintained connection with her audience by posting TikTok videos showing hospital meals.
"After a very scary time, Vanessa has made some progress," Fernando shared on January 17. "She was finally able to leave her room and get some fresh air, which was a big step. She's now able to eat, speak normally, and move her hands again."
By late January, Fernando reported significant improvements. "The pneumonia is almost gone, and the swelling in her hands, tongue, legs, and arms has gotten much better," he stated on January 28. "Yesterday, she managed to walk for the first time with the help of a walker."
Fernando launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover mounting medical expenses and arrange medical transport to Germany. On February 20, he announced Konopka was "out of danger" and her mother had arrived to accompany her back to Germany for continued treatment.
Tragically, Konopka succumbed to her illness just two weeks later.
"This morning, on March 7th, Vanessa passed away. She always loved connecting with you all, and her love for the Philippines was beyond words,"
Fernando announced in an emotional tribute. "Kushka, if you are perhaps reading this somewhere, thank you so much for teaching me how to love myself... I will forever love you and we may see each other again."
The couple had been together since meeting in Australia and relocated to Boracay in December 2022, where they built their travel vlog audience by showcasing their adventures across the Philippines.
