Fans are filled with anticipation as the first trailer for "A Complete Unknown" debuts, showcasing Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet's transformation into legendary musician Bob Dylan. Directed by James Mangold, known for his work on "Walk the Line," this biopic promises to chronicle Dylan's meteoric rise to fame in the early 1960s New York City music scene.
Set for a December release in the US and January in the UK, the film spans a crucial period in Dylan's career, from his arrival in New York in 1961 to the aftermath of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. This pivotal time frame saw Dylan's transition from folk icon to controversial electric rocker, a move that shocked fans and critics alike.
The star-studded cast includes Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash. Elle Fanning portrays Suze Rotolo, Dylan's early muse and artistic influence. Mangold describes the project as "a strong ensemble piece," emphasizing the impact Dylan had on those around him.
Chalamet's dedication to the role is evident. He reportedly enlisted the help of Austin Butler's "entire Elvis team" to perfect his portrayal. "I just saw the way [Butler] committed to it all – and realized I needed to step it up," Chalamet told GQ. Vocal coach Eric Vetro, who worked with Chalamet on "Wonka," praises the actor's ability to capture the "essence" of Dylan without resorting to mere impersonation.
The film's approach to Dylan's story is nuanced. Mangold explains to Rolling Stone, "I'm much more interested in the wake that this person has left on others, as much as I'm interested in unpacking who he is in some kind of conventional movie-Freudian way." This perspective promises a fresh take on the well-known figure.
"A Complete Unknown" is not the first attempt to bring Dylan's story to the screen. Todd Haynes' 2007 unconventional biopic "I'm Not There" featured multiple actors, including Cate Blanchett and Heath Ledger, portraying different aspects of Dylan's persona. This new adaptation aims for a more straightforward narrative while still capturing the complexity of its subject.
The film's release timing positions it as a strong Oscar contender, with Chalamet entering the best actor race alongside Daniel Craig in "Queer," Colman Domingo in "Sing Sing," and Joaquin Phoenix in "Joker: Folie à Deux." Coming off the $711 million box office success of "Dune: Part Two," Chalamet's star power is at an all-time high.
As the release date approaches, anticipation builds for what Mangold calls "a real act of acting brilliance."
