The Russo Brothers’ upcoming sci-fi epic ‘The Electric State’, starring Millie Bobby Brown, has officially secured a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association. Slated for release on Netflix in 2025, this marks a significant step forward for the long-anticipated project. The film, based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, was rated for “sci-fi violence/action, language, and some thematic material,” indicating that it will maintain a balance between intense action and broader audience accessibility.

‘The Electric State’ is set in an alternate version of 1997, following a young woman, played by Millie Bobby Brown, who embarks on a journey across a dystopian America ravaged by a civil war between humans and their former robotic servants. Accompanied by a yellow toy robot, her quest to find her missing brother introduces her to a variety of characters, including Chris Pratt’s mysterious smuggler and Giancarlo Esposito’s villainous Marshall, who controls robotic drones in pursuit of her.

This project has had a long road to the screen. Initially announced in 2017, ‘The Electric State’ experienced delays due to directorial changes and studio shifts, eventually landing at Netflix in 2022. Filming began later that year and wrapped in February 2023, with additional reshoots completed in early 2024. The Russo Brothers are teaming up once again with their frequent collaborators, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, to bring this visually striking dystopian world to life.

The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Ke Huy Quan, Anthony Mackie, Billy Bob Thornton, Stanley Tucci, and Jason Alexander. Thornton and Mackie voice pivotal robot characters, contributing to the film’s core conflict between humanity and AI.

With its distinct aesthetic inspired by Stålenhag’s art and a gripping storyline, ‘The Electric State’ is one of Netflix’s most anticipated releases. The film promises to deliver an engaging mix of action, emotion, and visual grandeur, appealing to both fans of the graphic novel and newcomers alike.
