Following the surprising streaming success of The Family Plan on Apple TV+, a sequel is officially in the works, with Mark Wahlberg set to reprise his role as former assassin Dan Morgan. The original 2023 action-comedy, directed by Simon Cellan Jones, followed Dan, who had transitioned to suburban life as a family man only to have his dangerous past resurface. The film’s popularity on streaming platforms solidified Wahlberg’s role in action-comedies, despite its mixed critical reception, as it quickly became one of Apple TV+’s most-watched releases.

Apple has confirmed The Family Plan 2, which will continue the Morgan family’s saga, promising new action-packed adventures and comedic twists. Set to film in December 2024 in London and Paris, the sequel brings back the original cast, including Michelle Monaghan as Jessica, Dan’s wife, and Van Crosby and Zoe Colletti as their children. In the new storyline, Dan takes his family on a European Christmas vacation, intending to give them the “perfect holiday.” However, past enemies re-emerge, turning their picturesque vacation into a high-stakes chase across Europe.

This time, the sequel aims to address critiques from the first film. While The Family Plan captured audience attention, critics found the original movie formulaic and lacking in both humor and excitement, leading to a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For The Family Plan 2, there is an opportunity to explore Dan’s character more deeply, add fresh humor, and perhaps introduce more intense action sequences—a mix that has helped Wahlberg succeed in other roles like Spenser Confidential.

Wahlberg shared his excitement for returning to the role, describing it as “incredibly rewarding” and expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming storyline and collaborations with Apple TV+ and Skydance. While a release date hasn’t been set, the anticipated holiday setting and international locations suggest a thrilling shift that could broaden the franchise’s appeal and offer a more compelling action-comedy.
