Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, the 2014 sci-fi epic that has captured the hearts of audiences globally, is heading back into select IMAX theaters as the film nears its 10th anniversary-one-week exclusive rerelease starting on December 6, 2024. Major cities in states like New York, California, and Texas will see this limited engagement shown in both 70mm IMAX film and digital formats. To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the movie, tickets for the 70mm screenings have already gone on sale, with the digital screenings going on sale later this month.
Interstellar originally premiered with a set of state-of-the-art visuals that took in over $730 million worldwide, along with five nominations at the Academy Awards, including a win for Best Visual Effects. With a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain, the movie deeply plunges into space exploration themes while Earth faces a grim future due to environmental collapse. McConaughey stars as Cooper, a former NASA pilot who joins a space mission to find a new home for humanity through a mysterious wormhole that leads him to an intense exploration of time, space, and how love can transcend dimensions.
Of course, Nolan is known for his tight collaboration with IMAX. As part of that, 64 minutes of Interstellar were shot in the expanded format of IMAX, adding even more visual allure to it. This re-release indicates Nolan’s success with immersive experiences, as seen very recently in Oppenheimer, which garnered almost $1 billion in its box office total and wowed audiences on IMAX screens. Notably, it’s an anniversary as the director reportedly gets to work on entirely new, state-of-the-art IMAX technology in his 2026 film-to feature another Interstellar cast member, Matt Damon.
For anyone who has followed Nolan’s career, the rerelease is an opportunity to see Interstellar on the big screen one more time, but it’s also a reminder of how deeply felt his vision can be. The limited engagement promises an ideal viewing experience for one of the most visually and narratively ambitious films of the last decade.
