Sony’s newest Marvel spin-off, Kraven the Hunter, held its world premiere in Macon, Georgia, ahead of its December 13 theatrical release. By J.C. Chandor and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular anti-hero, Kraven is a visceral origin story that follows an anti-hero from a more complicated family conflict to one of Marvel’s most feared hunters. Reactions have been hit or miss, with some critics praising the bold approach this movie takes while others had more negative things to say.
Critics have lauded the R-rating of the film, stating that it’s brutally action-packed and full of violent imagery. Social media reactions continue to single out Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s performance as perhaps the most charismatic and intense he has done to date. Fans loved the gritty aesthetic and high stakes of the movie, calling it one of the more ambitious entries into Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
Opinions were pretty divided among users on X. For some, the movie was a real knockout, filled with fury and emotional depth, while to others, it was a mess, uneven, and a dead-end for SSU. Although opinions are divided, the consensus would seem to place Kraven the Hunter a step above other SSU movies like Morbius and the Venom series.
The plot follows Kraven through various betrayals and challenges thrown his way by his father, played by Russell Crowe, and brother, Fred Hechinger. Supporting characters include Calypso, played by Ariana DeBose, who initially manipulates Kraven but later aids him. The movie builds up to a climax based on the “Gathering of the Five,” a storyline laced with deception and familial drama.
Interestingly, the movie lacks a post-credits scene, sparking speculation about the franchise’s future. Chandor has hinted at a follow-up based on the iconic comic storyline Kraven’s Last Hunt, contingent on the film’s commercial success. For now, Kraven the Hunter might mark the end of Sony’s Spider-Man spin-offs if it fails to connect with audiences.
While some fans loved the movie’s relentless action and fan service, full of Spider-Man lore, others were less impressed. Detractors criticized the film’s pacing and script, suggesting it may appeal more to hardcore Marvel fans than general audiences. Still, the striking visuals and unapologetic tone give the film a refreshing divergence from typical superhero fare.
Kraven the Hunter swings into theaters this Friday with a bold and brutal cinematic experience; whether it rejuvenates the SSU or serves as its swan song remains to be seen.
