Anthony Mackie is ready to suit up again—this time, not just as Captain America, but as one of the front-facing figures on what’s shaping up to be one of the biggest Marvel movies in history: Avengers: Doomsday. On May 1, 2026, the film promises not only a continuation of the saga of the Avengers, but an all-out crossover between the MCU and Fox’s defunct X-Men universe.
In a recent interview with IGN, Mackie revealed that production is ramping up. “We’re supposed to go out this week, and we’ll be out there doing it,” he said, adding that he’s especially excited about the creative team: “I feel with the script and having the Russo brothers back, it’s going to be great.”
Yes, and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo reportedly are returning—news that already is brightening fan speculations. Mackie intimated the movie would introduce “that old Marvel feel,” which a lot of seasoned fans have missed with the recent ups and downs in the franchise.
The cast list backs up the hype. Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), and Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm) are already signed up. To put a cherry on top of that, Avengers: Doomsday will mark the first time the X-Men officially join the big MCU team. Fox era powerhouses—Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast)—are all returning.
Even Tom Hiddleston has teased Loki’s involvement, saying cryptically, “It’s not over yet.”
This will be Mackie’s first appearance in an Avengers film as the new Captain America, after officially taking up the mantle in Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for 2025. He also led Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which explored Sam Wilson’s journey from sidekick to leader.
While other stars like Halle Berry and Chris Pratt have shrugged off their absence with a wink and a smile, Doomsday is rapidly emerging as a multiversal epic in emotional weight and fan-service-laden filmmaking.
Old and new heroes. An established directing duo. And, hopefully, Marvel’s tried-and-true genre-bending recipe of spectacle and heart.
