Andrew Garfield is willing to get back into the Spider-Man costume—but only if it gets weird. The actor, who originally donned the Peter Parker persona in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its sequel in 2014, was adamant at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in Abu Dhabi that he’s game for a comeback—but with one caveat: it must be weird, unconventional, and creatively daring.

As per ET bel Arabi, Garfield informed fans at a panel, “I really love playing Spider-Man. I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird. I think I would want to do something very strange.”.

He cited Spider-Verse films as an inspiration, a model for innovative storytelling: experimentation, parallel universes, even new interpretations of the iteration of familiar characters. “They’re so great,” he said of the Spider-Verse films. “You can honor the character in so many different ways through the multiverse.”

Garfield’s Spider-Man run was left short when Sony canceled The Amazing Spider-Man 3, leaving many storylines hanging. He would later describe the experience as being “left dangling.” But his surprise return in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he teamed up with Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire, gave a more fulfilling end to that saga. Garfield described the experience as “healing” and said that it reignited his love for the character.

In a October 2024 interview with Esquire, he elaborated on his criteria for a comeback: “I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing—if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before, something that’s unique and odd and exciting.”

As the MCU keeps developing multiverse narratives, the comeback of Garfield is not ruled out. There have already been whispers of a possible revival of Amazing Spider-Man 3 or a feature in upcoming multiverse-based Marvel movies such as Avengers: Secret Wars.

But if Garfield comes back, don’t expect a by-the-book superhero film. He’s just wanting to do something that breaks the mold—something “very weird,” in the best possible way. For now, the ball is in Marvel’s court, and fans can’t wait to see where the web takes him next.
