Johnny Depp made a striking appearance on the red carpet in London for the U.K. premiere of Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, marking his return to directing after more than two decades. The event took place at The Curzon Mayfair on Tuesday, July 8, where Depp, 62, wore his signature sunglasses and scarf, pairing them with a sharp all-black tailored jacket and pants.
Modi is Depp’s first directorial effort since 1997’s The Brave, which starred Marlon Brando. Based on Dennis McIntyre’s play, the film dives into the chaotic final days of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani’s life in 1916 Paris. Riccardo Scamarcio, 44, plays the titular artist, while legendary actor Al Pacino, 85, portrays art collector Maurice Gangnat. The cast also includes Stephen Graham, Antonia Desplat, Ryan McParland, Bruno Gouery, and Luisa Ranieri.
A trailer released in October 2024 set the tone for the film’s intense, moody atmosphere, showcasing Paris as a war-torn, bohemian labyrinth. In a standout line from the trailer, Pacino’s character challenges the essence of art itself: “Just because you can paint on a canvas does not make you an artist. Doesn’t even make you a painter.”
According to a release from Depp’s IN.2 Film production company, the story unfolds during a feverish three-day period, as Modigliani, on the run from police and grappling with despair, attempts to flee Paris and abandon his art. His fellow bohemians dismiss his plans, pushing the artist deeper into turmoil until a fateful encounter with a powerful art collector changes everything.
Depp previously described directing Modi as an “incredibly fulfilling and transformative experience.” He thanked the cast and crew for their “unwavering commitment and creativity,” and gave special recognition to Pacino, who originally asked Depp to direct the project. “How could I refuse Pacino?” Depp said.
Pacino, speaking to PEOPLE, called working with Depp “fun” and praised his creativity. “He’s wild. He’s wonderful,” the Oscar-winner said of his longtime friend.
At the 2024 San Sebastián Film Festival, Depp touched on personal parallels with Modigliani. “Each has their story,” he said, alluding to his public defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard. “Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera, televised, in fact.”
Following screenings at San Sebastián and the Rome Film Festival, Modi is set to hit theaters in 2025. Depp will next appear in Day Drinker, alongside Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline.
