Oscar-nominated breakout star Yura Borisov has officially joined the cast of Artificial, the upcoming film from acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino. Set up at Amazon MGM Studios, Artificial is described as a comedic drama unfolding in the world of artificial intelligence. The project reunites Guadagnino with the studio following his recent work on After the Hunt and Challengers.
The film is written by Simon Rich, known for his sharp comedic voice, and will be produced by Rich alongside David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, as well as Jennifer Fox.
Borisov, one of Russia’s most prolific actors with over 50 credits to his name, most recently captivated critics and audiences with his performance in Sean Baker’s Anora, a Palme d’Or-winning and Oscar-recognized sex worker comedy. Starring opposite Mikey Madison, Borisov played Igor, a reluctant henchman with a soft heart—marking his first English-language role. The role earned him widespread acclaim and a nomination for best supporting actor at the Academy Awards, along with nods from the SAG Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Independent Spirit Awards.
His international breakout traces back to his performance in Compartment Number 6, a Cannes Grand Prix winner, which earned him a best actor nomination at the European Film Awards. Domestically, he’s known for standout performances in Captain Volkonogov Escaped and Kirill Serebrennikov’s Petrov’s Flu.
Artificial continues Borisov’s momentum in Hollywood and marks another step into English-language features. Though details of his role are under wraps, early reports have indicated that Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro are also circling lead roles.
Guadagnino, coming off the October 10 theatrical release of After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri, brings his signature style to Artificial following his success with Challengers, led by Zendaya.
Borisov is represented by UTA, Color Creative, Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman, and Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis. Upcoming projects include Emily Mortimer’s directorial debut The Poet for A24 and Netflix’s Russian-language adaptation of Anna Karenina, titled Anna K.
With Artificial, Borisov cements his transition from international standout to a rising force in Hollywood storytelling.
