Mubi has picked up all Italian rights to Agon, the feature directorial debut from Giulio Bertelli, ahead of its premiere in the Critics’ Week section at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The streaming platform and distributor plans to release the sports-themed drama in Italian cinemas on August 29, marking the launch of its theatrical slate in Italy.

The move underscores Mubi’s commitment to supporting bold, new cinematic voices. “As Mubi Italia, we couldn’t be more excited to support Giulio Bertelli in his visionary and striking directorial debut,” said Gabriele D’Andrea, VP and managing director of Mubi in Italy. “We are deeply committed to bold, original storytelling ,in Italy and globally,  and Agon perfectly embodies our passion for discovering new and singular voices in cinema. We look forward to its premiere in Venice and to sharing it with audiences soon.”

In a simultaneous announcement, world sales rights to Agon have been acquired by The Match Factory, which is owned by Mubi. This global representation positions the film for broader international exposure following its Venice debut.

Agon follows three athletes competing in judo, fencing, and shooting ,  as they prepare for and take part in the fictional Ludoj 2024 Games. The film stars Alice Bellandi, an Olympic gold medalist in judo, in a lead role. Joining her are Yile Vianello and Sofija Zobina, both of whom appeared in La Chimera. The film is described as allegorical and draws inspiration from historical figures such as Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, and Russian cavalry officer Nadezhda Durova.

Thematically, Agon explores the contradictions embedded in the history of its featured sports. According to the synopsis, judo, fencing, and shooting originated as wartime practices developed during periods of peace. Over time, they evolved into structured professional sports and, eventually, entertainment. Through its characters and narrative, the film intends to offer “a contemporary account of the contradictions of these sports.”

Behind the camera, Giulio Bertelli ,  son of renowned fashion designer Miuccia Prada , makes his directorial debut, supported by a strong production team. Agon is produced by Bertelli himself alongside Max Brun, Jules Daly, Stella Rossa Savino, Joe Anton, Pietro Caracciolo, and Matthew E. Chausse under the banners of MIA Film, Big Red Films & Art+Vibes. The film also benefits from co-production support from Idev Sas and Financière Marigny Sasu.

As Agon heads into Venice’s Critics’ Week, expectations are building around this unique, sport-driven allegory  one that promises to blend physical rigor, historical echoes, and sharp cultural commentary.
