Amazon’s Prime Video is pushing its use of artificial intelligence even further with the introduction of Video Recaps, a new feature that turns entire seasons of TV shows into short, cinematic recap videos. This marks an upgrade from the platform’s earlier AI generated text recaps, adding visuals, sound and narration to help viewers quickly catch up before starting a new season.

According to Amazon, the Video Recaps feature uses generative AI to analyze a full season of a show, studying character arcs, key plot points and pivotal moments. The system then selects the most fitting video clips and pairs them with snippets of dialogue, music and sound effects. Everything is tied together with an AI generated voiceover to create a smooth, theatrical recap that feels similar to a professionally edited highlight reel.

The feature is currently available in beta for select English language Amazon originals in the United States. Among the first titles to get these AI powered video summaries are Fallout, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Upload, Bosch and The Rig. Prime Video users can access the recaps through a “Recap” button on a show’s detail page whenever they are moving to the next season. They will be able to choose either the new video recap or the existing text based version.

The company says that producing each recap involves several steps. The AI must first break down the storyline of an entire season and identify the most impactful scenes that viewers are likely to want to revisit. After that, it locates the strongest clips from across the episodes and blends them with music and dialogue that retain the tone of the show. Finally, an AI voiceover is added to guide viewers through the narrative without giving away anything beyond what they have already watched.

Gérard Medioni, Vice President of Technology at Prime Video, described the launch as a groundbreaking moment for streaming. He emphasized that the feature showcases Amazon’s continued investment in innovation and in improving how viewers experience content on the platform. The aim is to make it easier for people to return to shows after long breaks without needing to rewatch an entire season.

Before this upgrade, Prime Video had introduced X Ray Recaps, which offered spoiler free text summaries of episodes and seasons based on where a viewer last stopped watching. Those summaries avoided revealing future plot points. The new Video Recaps build on that idea but make the experience more immersive by adding motion, sound and narration.

For now, the Video Recaps feature is only available on connected TV devices, but Amazon plans to extend it to more devices in the coming months. As streaming platforms continue competing on personalization and viewer convenience, Prime Video’s move signals a new phase where AI does more than recommend shows,  it actively helps reshape how audiences engage with them.
