Paramount is loading up its future calendar with two major franchise projects and a special return to the past. The studio has confirmed new release dates for an untitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and an untitled Sonic Universe Event Film. Both are set to arrive in 2028, giving fans plenty to look forward to as two powerhouse brands prepare their next theatrical chapters.
The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature will hit theaters on November 17 2028. It marks the first live action and computer animation hybrid for Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo since the 2016 release of Out of the Shadows. That film struggled to make an impact in theaters, which prompted Paramount to shift its strategy. The studio leaned into animation with the 2023 release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. That film performed modestly at the box office and built enough momentum to spark a sequel that is scheduled for September 17 2027. The newly announced project is separate from that sequel and aims to reintroduce the brothers in a family friendly format that blends physical performance with digital character work.
Producer Neal H Moritz is attached to the film. He is widely known for guiding the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy to strong commercial results. His involvement signals that Paramount wants the same steady hand on the new Turtles adventure. Plot details remain under wraps and the studio has not revealed cast or director information. What is clear is that Paramount sees the Turtles as a long term franchise and is positioning the new film as a major release for the 2028 holiday corridor.
Sonic fans will not have to wait much longer either. Paramount has dated an untitled Sonic Universe Event Film for December 22 2028. This project is separate from Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which arrives in March 2027. The Sonic brand has quietly become one of the studio’s strongest assets. The first three installments in the series have combined to cross the one billion dollar mark worldwide. The upcoming project is expected to expand the world beyond the central storyline although the studio has declined to share specifics.
In addition to these new releases Paramount is also celebrating its legacy. The studio will bring the original Top Gun back to theaters on May 13 2026 in honor of its fortieth anniversary. The 1986 film directed by Tony Scott and led by Tom Cruise was the highest grossing release of its year with more than three hundred fifty million dollars in global earnings. Cruise returned to the role in 2022 for Top Gun Maverick which became the most successful film in the studio’s century long history.
With the Turtles returning in a new form Sonic expanding its universe and Top Gun taking a victory lap Paramount is preparing a diverse mix of nostalgia and forward momentum for audiences in the years ahead.
