Disney has officially set a streaming date for Tron Ares with the science fiction sequel scheduled to arrive on Disney Plus on Jan. 7. The film becomes the latest major theatrical release to make its transition to the company’s streaming platform, giving audiences another chance to explore the digital world that has defined the Tron franchise for more than four decades.
Tron Ares is the third installment in the Tron series, following the original Tron released in 1982 and its sequel Tron Legacy from 2010. The new film centers on a powerful artificial intelligence program named Ares that crosses over from the digital realm into the real world. This premise continues the franchise’s long standing interest in the relationship between humans and technology while expanding the scope beyond the computer grid that defined earlier entries.
Jared Leto leads the cast as the personified AI Ares. He is joined by an ensemble that includes Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges. Bridges reprises his iconic role as Kevin Flynn, the central figure from the previous two films, creating a direct narrative connection across all three movies. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning, who brings a modern visual approach while staying rooted in the established Tron mythology.
Disney released Tron Ares in theaters on Oct. 10, 2025. The film opened strongly with a global box office debut of sixty million dollars, surpassing its main competitor Roofman, which premiered during the same weekend. Despite the solid opening, the movie experienced a sharp decline in its second week when it lost the number one position to Black Phone 2. By the end of its theatrical run, Tron Ares earned a total of one hundred forty two million dollars worldwide.
While this figure marked a respectable performance, it fell well short of Tron Legacy, which grossed four hundred million dollars globally fifteen years earlier. The comparison highlights the challenges faced by long running franchises in attracting the same level of theatrical attendance in a changing entertainment landscape increasingly shaped by streaming.
The Tron franchise began with the original Tron, directed by Steven Lisberger, which earned fifty million dollars upon its release in 1982. Although critical reception was mixed at the time, the film was widely recognized for its groundbreaking visual effects. It introduced a distinctive style that blended live action footage with backlight animation, rotoscoping and early computer generated imagery. Later sequels moved away from that singular aesthetic in favor of more contemporary digital effects.
Beyond the feature films, Tron also expanded into television with the animated series Tron Uprising, which aired on Disney XD beginning in 2012 and ran for two seasons. With Tron Ares joining the Disney Plus library, viewers can now stream the entire film trilogy on the platform alongside Tron and Tron Legacy, offering both longtime fans and new audiences a complete look at the evolution of the franchise.
