More high speed drama is coming to the big screen. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that a sequel to the hit racing film F1 is officially in development, following the movie’s strong box office performance and critical acclaim.
Speaking to PEOPLE at The Hollywood Reporter’s Nominees Night on Feb. 10, Bruckheimer shared that the creative team is already shaping the next chapter of the story. “We’re working on the story. It’s really good,” said the 82 year old producer, who is also known for blockbuster franchises such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Top Gun. His track record with large scale action films makes the news of a sequel especially promising for fans of the racing drama.
Bruckheimer also revealed that conversations are underway with seven time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, who served as a producer and creative consultant on the original film. “We’re talking to Lewis Hamilton. We’re getting it going through him and pitching him the ideas and see what he thinks,” Bruckheimer said. Hamilton’s involvement was widely praised during the first film, as his real world experience in Formula 1 helped bring authenticity to the racing sequences and the culture of the sport.
While Bruckheimer would not confirm whether major stars will return, he did not rule it out. When asked about the possibility of Brad Pitt reprising his role, he responded with a smile, “We’ll see. I’m not going to tell you yet.” Pitt, 62, led the first film as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 prodigy who steps back into the racing world after three decades away from the spotlight. His character’s comeback story struck a chord with audiences and became a central emotional thread of the film.
Damson Idris costarred as Joshua Pearce, a talented young driver mentored by Sonny, while Javier Bardem portrayed Rubén Cervantes, the determined team owner. The chemistry between the cast and the high intensity race sequences helped propel F1 to major success. Released in June 2025, the film grossed an impressive 633 million dollars worldwide, firmly establishing it as a box office hit.
Beyond its commercial performance, F1 also earned significant awards recognition. The film received four Oscar nominations at the upcoming 2026 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Visual Effects. The nominations reflect both its technical achievements and its strong storytelling.
Director Joseph Kosinski previously told PEOPLE in October 2025 that he would welcome the opportunity to continue Sonny Hayes’ journey. “Based on the reception of the film, I would love to see what adventures Sonny Hayes is going on to next, and I think the audience would too,” Kosinski said. He added that discussions about the next chapter would begin soon, focusing on where the character’s story could go from here.
Kosinski also recalled how emotional it was for Pitt to wrap filming, which took place during real Formula 1 races across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. “We let him do a few more laps at the end of the last take just because I knew he loved it,” the director said. “I think it was emotional for him to say goodbye to this character because he really loved playing him.”
With the original film now streaming on Apple TV and excitement building around a sequel, fans of F1 can look forward to another thrilling ride. If the same creative team and cast return, the next installment promises to deliver more heart, speed, and drama both on and off the track.
