"Zootopia 2" has added another milestone to its towering theatrical run, edging out "A Minecraft Movie" to become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2025.
The animated follow-up from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures has been a box office powerhouse since its Thanksgiving debut, steadily closing the gap with its blocky competitor. After 13 consecutive weekends in the domestic top 10, the film has inched ahead with $424.2 million in North America, narrowly surpassing "A Minecraft Movie," which previously led the yearly chart with $424.08 million.
Globally, the sequel has long dominated the conversation. The family adventure has amassed $1.425 billion internationally and $1.85 billion worldwide, ranking as Hollywood's top global earner of the year. Its performance helped drive Disney to one of its strongest box office years since before the pandemic, alongside billion-dollar titles like "Lilo & Stitch" and "Avatar: Fire and Ash," pushing the studio past $6 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
Arriving nine years after the original 2016 hit, "Zootopia 2" opened to $158 million domestically and $559 million worldwide over the extended holiday frame. The launch marked the second-largest Thanksgiving opening ever, the biggest animated debut on record and the fourth-largest global opening in history, trailing only juggernauts such as "Avengers: Endgame."
Strong reviews and glowing audience scores fueled the momentum. The PG-rated release became the fastest film in its category to cross $1 billion worldwide, hitting the milestone in just 17 days. It has since overtaken "Inside Out 2" as the highest-grossing animated feature ever and even surpassed "Avengers: Endgame" in China for Motion Picture Association titles.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the sequel reunites rabbit officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and fox Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) as they investigate a mysterious new reptilian arrival. With records continuing to fall, industry observers expect Disney to soon signal the inevitable third installment.
