Apple TV has confirmed that its acclaimed science fiction drama “For All Mankind” will conclude with a sixth and final season, giving the long running series a rare opportunity in modern television to complete its story as originally planned. The announcement comes ahead of the highly anticipated return of Season 5 and just before the debut of its spinoff series “Star City,” which will explore the alternate space race from the Soviet perspective and is set to premiere on May 29.
Since its launch on November 1, 2019, alongside “The Morning Show,” “For All Mankind” has stood as one of Apple TV’s most enduring original productions. Over the years, the show has built a reputation for bold storytelling, imagining a world in which the Soviet Union reached the moon first, fundamentally altering the course of global history. This alternate timeline has allowed the series to explore not only advancements in space exploration but also shifts in politics, culture, and social progress.
Creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi expressed their excitement about being able to bring the story to its intended conclusion. In a joint statement, Wolpert and Nedivi emphasized how meaningful it has been to explore the series across six seasons and noted their gratitude to Apple TV and Sony Pictures Television for supporting their vision through to the final chapter. Their comments highlight how unusual it is in today’s television landscape for a show to receive a planned ending rather than facing abrupt cancellation.
Season 5 is set in the 2010s within the show’s alternate timeline, where Mars has evolved into a thriving human settlement. The colony, known as Happy Valley, now hosts thousands of residents and serves as a hub for further missions into the solar system. However, tension is rising as Earth based governments attempt to impose control over the Red Planet, creating friction between Martian settlers and their home nations. New episodes will roll out weekly beginning March 29 and continue through May 29.
The upcoming sixth season will take the story even further, bringing it to a version of the present day. According to Wolpert, reaching this point has always been a central goal for the creators. From the divergence in 1969 to a reimagined present, the series aims to show how persistent investment in space exploration and innovation might have reshaped the modern world. Nedivi added that despite changes along the way, the team has remained remarkably close to their original creative roadmap, making the conclusion feel both earned and intentional.
Season 5 will see the return of key cast members including Joel Kinnaman, Toby Kebbell, Edi Gathegi, Cynthy Wu, Coral Peña, and Wrenn Schmidt, along with several new additions to the ensemble. The series has also earned critical acclaim throughout its run, receiving awards for innovation and multiple nominations across major industry groups.
As “For All Mankind” approaches its final chapter, it stands as a rare example of a streaming era success story that has been allowed to grow, evolve, and ultimately finish on its own terms.
