Sabrina Carpenter is shedding light on her close friendship with Taylor Swift, which deepened after the "Espresso" singer, 25, joined Swift, 34, on her international Eras Tour last year.
In an interview for Variety's August 2024 cover story, Carpenter described Swift, a 14-time Grammy winner, as a "rock star," reacting to a record store categorizing Swift's album The Tortured Poets Department in the "rock" section. "She's just so cool and confident with everything," Carpenter said, praising Swift's graceful handling of various situations.
Carpenter also addressed her involvement in a SKIMS campaign, which drew attention due to Swift's well-known feud with the brand's founder, Kim Kardashian. "The idea that I needed to 'ask for her permission' is absurd," Carpenter clarified. "Taylor is one of my closest friends; we hang out, have dinner, and text like any best friends would."
As Carpenter's career continues to rise, she values Swift's guidance and the insights she gains from their circle of artists. "It's amazing to get advice from her on things you can't just Google," she told Variety. "We share our music, and whenever I'm tempted to react on social media, I think, 'Maybe I'll write a song instead.'"
Carpenter previously discussed the online buzz surrounding her SKIMS campaign in a Rolling Stone interview, clarifying that her relationship with Swift remained strong. "I've been very open with her about it, and I love and support her completely," Carpenter said of the "Anti-Hero" singer. "People will talk, but it doesn't affect us."
Before their friendship blossomed and the Eras Tour collaboration, Carpenter, a longtime fan of Swift, shared how the artist's music, particularly her 2020 album folklore, influenced her creative process. Speaking to Apple Music in 2020, Carpenter recalled Swift's message about releasing music without overthinking. "It inspired me to embrace my feelings in my music," she said.
