Madonna, the iconic “Like a Prayer” singer, recently attended the New York Film Festival premiere of the Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” and she had nothing but high praise for the film and its cast. The event, held on October 1, saw Madonna posing for photos with the cast and crew, including director Jacques Audiard and stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Édgar Ramírez.
Madonna took to her Instagram Stories to share her admiration for the film, calling it a “Masterpiece!” and praising the “unbelievable performances” of the cast. She posted several photos from the event, including one with Audiard, whom she labeled a “GENIUS!!”. The singer’s enthusiastic endorsement adds to the growing buzz around the film, which has already garnered critical acclaim at various film festivals.
“Emilia Pérez” tells the story of a fearsome cartel leader, Emilia (played by Gascón), who enlists the help of an unappreciated lawyer, Rita (played by Saldaña), to fake her death so she can live authentically as her true self. The film is described as “an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations,” blending liberating song and dance with bold visuals.
The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it won two awards, including the best actress honor for its ensemble of women. It also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Selena Gomez expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming response to the film. Gomez, who plays a significant role in the movie, described singing in the film as “therapeutic” and a departure from her usual style.
At the New York Film Festival, the camaraderie among the cast was evident. Zoe Saldaña spoke highly of her fellow cast members, noting the strong bond they formed while working on the film. “To this day, there’s so much love, there’s so much respect. We’re rooting for each other,” she said.
“Emilia Pérez” is set to hit select theaters on November 1 before streaming on Netflix starting November 13. With Madonna’s glowing review and the film’s impressive festival run, “Emilia Pérez” is poised to be a must-watch for fans of innovative and genre-defying cinema.
