David Foster enters the Broadway scene with new sounds and a new challenge. The 16-time Grammy winner has unleashed “Something to Shout About,” the newest single from his new stage production, Boop! The Musical. The ballad, featuring star Jasmine Amy Rogers, who portrays Betty Boop, hits officially on March 11th-a week ahead of the debut production in early April.
The song is a centerpiece of the musical and marks what Foster calls the “11 o’clock number,” a turning point late in the second act. Originally intended for earlier in the show, it was moved after director Jerry Mitchell insisted it had more impact later in the story. “He said this song was too strong to go that early,” Foster told People. “So we reworked it, built it out, and now it hits harder.”
The musical reimagines the iconic cartoon character with a modern arc of self-discovery and ambition. Foster says the song captures Betty’s inner conflict. “She has everything in her life, but she still needs something to shout about,” he said. “That’s what drives the story.”
Boop! The Musical has been in the works for 15 years. Foster first got involved after being approached by producer Mark Fleischer, who controls the rights to the Betty Boop brand. Since then, the project has slowly taken shape with a team of Broadway veterans, including Tony-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, lyricist Susan Birkenhead, and book writer Bob Martin.
It begins previews March 11 at the Broadhurst Theatre, with an opening night scheduled for April 5. The show marks a new phase in Foster’s career, having traded producing chart-topping hits for writing for the stage. “I was looking for a new challenge. Something that pushed me creatively,” he said. “This came at the right time.
Something to Shout About” is the second single released from Boop! The Musical, following the first single “Where I Wanna Be.” Both songs are an advance taste of what is to come in the full cast recording, due later this spring.
With a tried-and-true creative team, a classic character, and Foster’s music underpinning it, Boop! The Musical is proving to be one of the big stories of the 2025 Broadway season.
