Dove Cameron is stepping into a new chapter of her music career—one where she refuses to hold back. The singer and actress, known for her sultry and whispery vocals on hits like "Boyfriend" and "Breakfast," recently opened up about her journey toward embracing her full voice and newfound confidence.
In an exclusive interview with E! News' The Rundown, the 29-year-old reflected on how she once believed that belting wasn't "appropriate" for pop music. "I had this weird belief that my full voice—like belting—was not appropriate for pop," she admitted. "I don't know why I had this complex. I thought it translated as very aggressive or nasally or just not nice to listen to."
Because of these doubts, Cameron intentionally toned down her voice in earlier music, believing that softer, breathier vocals fit the industry standard. However, with the encouragement of close friends—especially her best friend Veronica—she was finally convinced to fully unleash her voice. "My best friend Veronica was always like, 'You're so stupid, you have three brain cells. Why aren't you singing on your songs?'" Cameron joked. "So, I finally just bossed up and tried it, and I was like, 'Oh, I was being silly. I like it.'"
Her latest single, Too Much, reflects this newfound confidence. The song, which tackles the idea of women being told they take up too much space, is deeply personal for Cameron. "It's really less about that one specific event," she explained, "and more about the grand scope of my life and how I internalized feeling like I was too much wherever I went."
The self-assuredness Cameron has found in her voice is also carrying over to her upcoming album, which she teased as featuring "a lot of vocal exploration." Fans can expect to hear her fully embracing her range and power in a way she never has before.
With a bold new sound and a fresh perspective, Dove Cameron is proving that she's no longer shrinking herself to fit in—she's taking up space and loving every moment of it.
