"You heard it first, a gospel album," said Snoop, 53, adding, "God is good," as he teased the spiritually inspired record that promises to take listeners to church. The album's cover art features a cherished image of his mother dressed in pink, holding a bouquet of flowers, printed on a memorial fan resting on a wooden surface.
The 21-track project includes collaborations with notable artists such as Jamie Foxx and features performances by the Death Row Mass Choir. Snoop also shared the album's tracklist, with the opening song titled "Mother I Miss You." The first single from Altar Call is scheduled to drop on April 18, according to Okayplayer.
This will be Snoop's second gospel album, following his 2018 release Bible of Love. Speaking about his inspiration for Altar Call, the rapper shared with Okayplayer, "The spirit of my mother will forever live within me. This album is a reflection of what she has taught me — to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world." He described the new project as "another chapter out of the Bible of Love."
Beverly Tate, who served as a longtime church choir director, passed away in October 2021. Her death was first announced by Snoop's father, Vernell Varnado, who asked fans to pray for the family during their time of grief. Snoop later shared a touching tribute on Instagram with a photo of him and his mother, writing, "Mama thank u for having me 🙏🏾🌹" and "Thank u God for giving me an angel 🕊 for a mother 💖🙏🏽🌹💝 TWMA" — the latter now serving as the caption for the Altar Call cover image.
Throughout his career, Snoop has consistently spoken with admiration and love for his mother. In a 2008 interview with Esquire, he revealed that it was Tate who gave him the nickname "Snoop," inspired by his childhood obsession with the Peanuts cartoon character Snoopy. "I watched so much, I started to look like him," he joked.
With Altar Call, Snoop blends faith, family, and music, creating a personal and powerful tribute to the woman who helped shape his life and legacy.
