WWE legend and Hollywood actor John Cena has officially announced his retirement from professional wrestling. The 16-time world champion made the announcement during a packed Money in the Bank event in Toronto, Canada.
Cena, 47, revealed his plans for a farewell tour beginning in 2025, culminating in his final WrestleMania appearance. "Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from WWE," Cena stated, as the crowd responded with mixed emotions. He outlined his intentions to compete in the 2025 Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, marking his last appearances at these marquee events.
The wrestler-turned-actor emphasized that while WrestleMania 41 would be his final WrestleMania, it wouldn't be his absolute last match. In a post-event press conference, Cena elaborated on his retirement plans: "Hopefully, if everything goes according to plan, we're going straight through from January through December. We're going to try to do a long list of dates, I think right now it's tentatively hovering in the mid-30s to 40s."
Cena's WWE career began in 2001, spanning over two decades filled with memorable moments and fierce rivalries. He has faced off against numerous wrestling icons, including The Rock, Triple H, CM Punk, and Randy Orton. His 16 world championship reigns tie him with the legendary Ric Flair for the most in wrestling history.
Beyond the ring, Cena has successfully transitioned into acting, starring in films such as "The Marine," "Trainwreck," "The Suicide Squad," and "Fast and Furious 9." He has been performing part-time with WWE since 2018 as his Hollywood career flourished.
Cena's impact extends beyond entertainment. He holds the Guinness World Record for granting the most Make-A-Wish wishes, having fulfilled 650 wishes for seriously ill children as of July 19, 2022.
During his retirement announcement, Cena wore a t-shirt bearing the phrases "The last time is now" and "John Cena farewell tour." He expressed gratitude to his fans, saying, "Thank you so much for letting me play in the house you built for so many years. Thank you so much for your voice because it's really loud and for your honesty because it's always brutal."
As Cena prepares for his final run in WWE, speculation is already building about potential opponents for his last match. The wrestling world eagerly anticipates this farewell tour, which promises to be an emotional journey for both Cena and his fans.
WWE executive Paul "Triple H" Levesque shared a touching moment with Cena following the announcement, highlighting the impact Cena has had on the industry. As he transitions away from in-ring competition, Cena has confirmed his intention to remain part of the "WWE family" in some capacity, ensuring his legacy will continue to influence the world of professional wrestling for years to come.
