FX's historical drama "Shogun" and culinary comedy "The Bear" dominated the 2024 Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, with 25 and 23 nods respectively.
Set in feudal Japan, "Shogun" will vie for best drama series against contenders like Netflix's "The Crown" and Apple TV+'s "The Morning Show." Its stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai received lead acting nominations.
"The Bear" broke the record for most comedy nominations in a single year. The restaurant-set series will compete again for best comedy, a category it won previously. Other comedy nominees include ABC's "Abbott Elementary" and HBO's "Hacks."
Netflix's "Baby Reindeer," based on creator Richard Gadd's real stalking experience, earned 11 nominations including best limited series. It faces competition from FX's "Fargo" and HBO's "True Detective: Night Country."
Netflix led networks with 107 nominations, followed closely by FX with 93 and HBO/Max with 91. The Television Academy's nearly 22,000 members will choose winners to be announced September 15 on ABC.
This year saw 36 first-time acting nominees, including five from "Shogun." Oscar winner Jodie Foster received her debut Emmy acting nod for "True Detective."
"The Bear" stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri will compete in lead comedy acting categories. "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator Larry David quipped that his nominations prove "misanthropy is finally being recognized as an art form."
Other notable nominees include Steve Martin and Martin Short for "Only Murders in the Building," which garnered 21 nods. Selena Gomez earned her first acting nomination for the series.
The Emmys return to their traditional fall time frame after last year's delay due to Hollywood strikes. With familiar favorites like "Succession" and "The White Lotus" absent, this year's race features fresh contenders across drama, comedy and limited series categories.
