Jimmy Kimmel had some humorous remarks for Jon Stewart during the 2024 Emmy Awards after losing to him in the Outstanding Talk Series category. Stewart, 61, along with the team behind The Daily Show, took home the prestigious award, prompting Kimmel, 56, to jokingly call him out for coming back to the Comedy Central series nine years after stepping down.

Kimmel took the stage after the ceremony's In Memoriam segment, where late comedian Bob Newhart was honored, and began with a cheeky introduction. "And the Emmy for 'deceased industry professional we'll miss most' goes to..." he said. The joke was followed by Kimmel reflecting on Newhart's legacy, describing him as a "humble, politely hilarious man" who had a remarkable career. He pointed out that Newhart received his first Emmy nomination in 1962 but didn't win one until 2013, over 50 years later. Kimmel turned this observation into a humorous lesson for all present, noting, "That's a great lesson."

With the crowd warmed up, Kimmel then directed a playful jab at Stewart, who was present for his first Emmy win in several years. "And that lesson is: Jon Stewart, you should be ashamed of yourself. You said you were retiring," Kimmel quipped, referencing Stewart's much-publicized departure from The Daily Show years ago. Stewart had returned to the show, and his win this year marked his 23rd Emmy award overall.

Kimmel's own show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, had been up for the same award, competing against The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Although Kimmel didn't take home the prize, he made sure to use his stage time to pay tribute to Newhart and celebrate Stewart's well-deserved win with his signature comedic flair.

Despite the lighthearted roast, Kimmel showed deep admiration for the late Bob Newhart, highlighting how lucky he felt to have known the legendary comedian personally. "Those of you who knew Bob, who knew him personally, knew he was exactly who you thought he was and who you hoped he would be," Kimmel shared. "He didn't need to have range—he had something very few comedians today have: a degree in accounting," Kimmel joked, blending sincerity and humor in his tribute.

The 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Stewart's win marking another milestone in his storied career.
