Sean Evans, host of the widely acclaimed Hot Ones series, has become a key stakeholder in First We Feast, the production studio behind his iconic show. This move comes as part of an $82.5 million all-cash deal, where BuzzFeed sold the studio to a consortium of buyers, including Evans himself, alongside notable players like Chris Schonberger, Crooked Media, and Rhett & Link's Mythical Entertainment. Billionaire George Soros' investment firm, Soros Fund Management, also joined the venture.
This acquisition marks a significant shift for First We Feast, which will now operate independently. Schonberger, the studio's founder, has stepped into the role of CEO, while Evans assumes a dual position as both host and Chief Creative Officer. "With new investment, we're poised to expand into exciting new areas, including live events and talent acquisitions," Schonberger stated, emphasizing the brand's growth ambitions.
Launched in 2015, Hot Ones has redefined celebrity interviews by integrating a fiery twist—guests tackle progressively spicier chicken wings while fielding thoughtful questions. Over the years, it has garnered over 4 billion views on YouTube and a loyal fan base drawn to Evans' unique interview style. High-profile guests such as Paul Rudd, Jennifer Lawrence, and Billie Eilish have graced the show, solidifying its reputation as a pop culture phenomenon.
Evans expressed his gratitude in a statement celebrating the show's success. "As we approach the 10th anniversary of Hot Ones, I'm constantly amazed by the passion and loyalty of our fans," he said. Reflecting on the journey, Evans hinted at exciting ventures ahead: "The future is spicy, and I can't wait to see what's next."
First We Feast, which began as a blog under Complex Media, has evolved into a cultural powerhouse. Acquired by BuzzFeed in 2021, it remained under their umbrella even as Complex Media was sold to NTWRK for $108.6 million in 2023.
The sale of First We Feast now allows BuzzFeed to reduce its outstanding debt by over $150 million and realign its focus toward AI-driven media innovation. BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti commented, "This sale is a pivotal step in our strategic transformation as we invest in scalable, tech-enabled services."
With its 26th season set to premiere on January 23 and a holiday extravaganza slated for December 19, Hot Ones is poised to kick off its next decade stronger than ever. As the platform expands into new territories, it cements its status as a trailblazer in entertainment and food culture alike.
