A quarter-century after Gilmore Girls first premiered on The WB, the world of Stars Hollow is stepping back into the spotlight. Ink On Paper Studios has announced a feature documentary, Searching For Stars Hollow, in honor of the dramedy’s 25th anniversary this October.
The project brings together a cross-section of the Gilmore universe, with cast, crew, and creatives recounting how Amy Sherman-Palladino’s fast-talking, pop culture–obsessed mother-daughter story became one of television’s most enduring cult favorites.
Among the familiar faces taking part are Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Jared Padalecki (Dean Forester), and Chad Michael Murray (Tristan Dugray), alongside Keiko Agena (Lane Kim), Sally Struthers (Babette Dell), Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Emily Kuroda (Mrs. Kim), and Rose Abdoo (Gypsy). Additional appearances include Kathleen Wilhoite, Matt Jones, Grant Lee Phillips, director Jamie Babbit, writer-producer Stan Zimmerman, and casting duo Jami Rudofsky and Mara Casey. Also featured is Kevin T. Porter, co-host of the popular Gilmore Guys podcast that helped reignite fandom in the 2010s.
Behind the camera, the documentary is led by directors Meghna Balakumar and Kevin Konrad Hanna, with Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs) executive producing and Jim Demonakos producing.
The filmmakers describe Searching For Stars Hollow as both an origin story and cultural study, designed to showcase how Gilmore Girls has resonated with multiple generations of viewers. According to Balakumar, more than 100 hours of footage have already been shot:
“The interviews that we’ve conducted with the cast have been a delight,” she said in a statement. “We’ve already unearthed stories, commentary, critiques, and more—and we’re continuing to film so this can be the fullest, most complete portrait possible at this anniversary moment.”
Producer Demonakos adds that the film will highlight how Gilmore Girls continues to thrive long after its original seven-season run (2000–2007) and Netflix revival (A Year in the Life in 2016). “This documentary is for fans of the show but also for anyone interested in cultural history and how television impacts lives,” he noted.
Noticeably absent from the announced lineup are Lauren Graham (Lorelai), Alexis Bledel (Rory), Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson, and series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. Their involvement remains unconfirmed, leaving fans eager for updates. On social media, reactions have already reflected both excitement and apprehension, with many noting the significance of hearing directly from the show’s leads.
While no release date has been set, the team has launched a Kickstarter campaign to support final production. Given the outpouring of nostalgia surrounding the anniversary—and the series’ continued popularity on streaming—the doc is already positioned as a must-watch for its devoted fan base.
Searching For Stars Hollow aims to do what the best documentaries about pop culture phenomena accomplish: pull back the curtain, deepen appreciation, and remind audiences why they fell in love in the first place.
