Finland is stepping into the global spotlight with “Sneakermania,” a new eight-episode drama series produced by Helsinki-filmi and set to air on YLE in February 2026. The show introduces a different side of Finnish storytelling, moving away from the brooding detective dramas and Nordic noir thrillers the region has become known for.
At its core, “Sneakermania” follows Ola, a teenage sneakerhead obsessed with the iconic Air Jordan 1 Low OG Chicago. Determined to carve out a name for himself as a fashion influencer, Ola partners with his friend Bee to build a TikTok following. Their ambitions hit a wall, however, when Ola’s former best friend Jay swoops in, threatening to steal his thunder and derail his dreams.
Director Ima Iduozee described the series as a story that evolves from playful humor into moments of envy, betrayal, and self-discovery. “The story shifts from lighthearted, friendly banter to moments of envy and dishonesty. While the tone often stays comedic, the characters face real challenges: moments that test their morals, motives, and the limits of what they’re willing to sacrifice,” he said.
According to Iduozee, one of the show’s most pressing themes is belonging. “The desire to be seen, heard and accepted,” he explained. “Social media plays a central role in ‘Sneakermania,’ offering a space to create your self-image and brand, giving you a sense of autonomy over how others perceive you. For Ola, it becomes a way of gaining motion and respect.”
While Finland has earned a reputation for crime dramas, Iduozee wanted to highlight a different cultural pulse. “We have so much more to offer than Nordic noir and detective dramas. I wanted to show a version of Helsinki that felt authentic to me. A generation of young creatives who are bold, self-determined and unafraid to go after what they want.”
Sneaker culture proved the perfect entry point. As Mia Ylönen, head of drama at Helsinki-filmi, pointed out: “For a massive number of young adults, sneakers are much more than shoes. They are a cultural language representing identity, creativity and community.”
The production pulled inspiration from across Finland’s creative scene. First-time headwriter Vilja Keskimäki penned the script, while local artists Turisti, Averagekidluke, and Bizi provide the soundtrack. To ensure authenticity, the team brought in stylists, designers, dancers, and influencers who live and breathe sneaker culture.
Though Ola drives the narrative, “Sneakermania” also explores the ambitions of a wider group of young characters. “They share his passion for sneakers, DIY culture and creative self-expression, and the thrills of finding their place in the world while navigating friendship and ambition,” Iduozee said.
Ylönen praised Iduozee as a breakthrough talent: “I believe Ima is the next best thing to come out of Finland: a young, creatively unique director whose vibrant vision is something we haven’t seen on Finnish screens before.”
With “Sneakermania,” Finnish television is offering a bold new story of ambition, friendship, and the universal search for identity—proving that Helsinki has plenty more to show the world than shadows and crime.
