Jimmy Kimmel struggled to hold back tears as he opened the final episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! for 2025, delivering an emotional monologue that reflected on a year filled with personal loss, professional uncertainty, and public controversy.

The late-night host became visibly choked up almost immediately after stepping onstage on Dec. 18, apologizing to the audience as his voice cracked. Kimmel described the past year as unusually difficult, saying it brought more emotional highs and lows than any other period in his life.

While acknowledging the challenges, Kimmel made it clear that viewers played a crucial role in helping him and his team push forward. He expressed gratitude for the loyalty shown during the show's temporary suspension earlier in the year, crediting audiences for supporting the program upon its return. According to Kimmel, that encouragement went beyond television ratings and provided genuine reassurance during an uncertain time.

The 58-year-old host also reflected on the broader purpose of late-night television, especially during moments of national stress. He explained that hearing from viewers who felt comforted or reassured by comedy helped him feel less alone. Kimmel suggested that laughter and shared experiences can offer stability when the world feels overwhelming.

Speaking directly to international audiences, Kimmel acknowledged ongoing political and social turmoil in the United States. He emphasized that many Americans are deeply troubled by current events and remain committed to compassion and accountability. Despite the challenges, he stressed his belief that the country still holds far more good than harm.

Beyond professional pressures, Kimmel endured a devastating personal loss in November with the death of his longtime friend and bandleader, Cleto Escobedo III. The two had known each other since childhood, and Kimmel previously described their decades-long friendship as one of the great privileges of his life.

Throughout 2025, Kimmel also faced repeated criticism from President Donald Trump, who publicly called for his show to be taken off the air. Rather than retreat, the host continued to respond with humor and pointed commentary.

Earlier this month, Kimmel signed a one-year contract extension with ABC, ensuring Jimmy Kimmel Live! will continue through the 2026–2027 season, closing an exhausting year on a note of cautious optimism.
